Phenotypic heterogeneity is related to the cell-to-cell heterogeneity in gene expression, leading ultimately to different phenotypes exhibited by cells belonging to a clonal population (e.g., cell producing or not producing a compound of interest, or cell being more resistant than another to a specific stress).
