Fitness is related to the difference in growth rate between two genotypes or phenotypes. We have recently discovered that the fitness cost, or switching cost, is a significant driver of cell population diversification. The fitness cost refers to the loss of growth experienced by a cell when it decides to activate a specific gene circuit or exhibit an alternative phenotype.
